  • Maya’s Volume Noise texture as a bump map

    V-Ray for Maya version 2.25.01, revision 22615 from Dec 21 2012, on Maya 2013 SP2 Win 7 64bit

When using Maya’s Volume Noise texture as a bump map in a v-ray Material shader, the shader renders the object using its perpendicular-to-face normals, rather than its correct smoothed-object normals.

Rendering the object as a subdivision surface fixes the problem, but this is not an option for many of our scenes.

The problem does not appear with other bump mapping methods (as far as we know) but the volume noise shader is the best one available to us for procedurally rendering an all-over surface bump.

This bug is continually causing problems.

Please see sample renders, attached. (The smoothed object is rendered as a vRay subdivision surface.)

Unfortunately I don't know how to avoid this problem with fine bump maps (it happens with any fine bump map) except using subdivision surfaces. Remember that smoothed normals are a cheat to give a smooth appearance to an object that is not actually smooth. Being a cheat, it works in many cases, but it falls apart in others. It's the same issue as with glossy reflections showing the polygons at low glossiness values.

    Best regards,

I only act like I know everything, Rogers.
